ISO 18001: 2007 Occupational Health & Safety Management System
This standard prescribes requirements for an OH & SMS to enable an organization to formulate a policy and objectives, taking into account legislative requirements and information about significant hazards and risks, which the organization can control and over which it can be expected to have influence, to protect its employees and others, whose health and safety may be affected by the activities of the organization. All the requirements in this standard are intended to be incorporated into any OH & Safety Management System.
The extent of application depends on nature of activities, complexity and other stake holders. Prioritize the same and take action to eliminate the cause, minimize the impact through Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) & emergency preparedness plan.
Joint OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Systems
There are several common elements between those three systems, such as management review, document control, corrective action and the requirement for trained personnel. These can be integrated to a single, joint system or a combination of the above. Audit of joint systems is available and may be best method for some companies.
Integrated Systems not only help an organizations internally, by reducing duplication and providing a centralized document control system, but may also offer cost benefits for your third party audits.
